Srpska pravoslavna crkva /SPC/ danas proslavlja Svetu braću Ćirila i Metodija, koji su širili hrišćansku vjeru i pismenost među Slovenima.
Rođeni su u Solunu, u kući znamenitih i bogatih roditelja. Stariji brat Metodije proveo je kao oficir deset godina među Slovenima /makedonskim/ i tako naučio slovenski jezik.
Po povratku u Grčku zamonašio se, a malo poslije toga pridružio mu se i mlađi brat Ćirilo /Konstantin/.
Kada je hazarski car Kagan tražio od cara Mihaila propovijednike hrišćanstva, car mu je poslao braću Ćirila i Metodija.
Oni su ubijedili prvo Kagana, a zatim i mnogo naroda preveli u hrišćanstvo.
Po povratku u Carigrad sastavili su slovensku azbuku od 38 slova i počeli da prevode crkvene knjige sa grčkog na slovenski.
Na poziv kneza Rastislava otišli su u Moraviju da šire vjeru Hristovu, a umnožene crkvene knjige podijelili su sveštenicima da uče omladinu.
Na papin poziv stigli su u Rim, gdje se Ćirilo razbolio i umro 14. februara 869. godine.
Metodije se potom vratio u Moraviju i nastavio sa širenjem vjere među Slovenima sve do upokojenja 6. aprila 885. godine.
Njegovo djelo nastavili su njegovi učenici sa svetim Klimentom, kao episkopom na čelu. Prešli su Dunav i stigli na jug, u Makedoniju /Ohrid/ i tu produžili započeti posao braće Ćirila i Metodija.
