Međunarodni dan porodice obilježava se danas, 15. maja, a cilj je da se istakne značaj porodice, koja predstavlja jednu od najvećih vrijednosti u društvu.
Porodica je jedno od najmoćnijih okruženja koje utiče na ukupan razvoj i dobrobit djece.
Generalna skupština je 1993. godine u rezoluciji (A/RES/47/273) odlučila da se 15. maja svake godine treba obilježavati kao Međunarodni dan porodice.
Ovaj dan pruža priliku za podizanje svijesti o problemima porodice i za povećanje znanja o socijalnim, ekonomskim i demografskim procesima koji pogađaju porodice.
Porodice širom svijeta se mijenjaju, a mnoge postaju sve manje, kako raste broj jednoroditeljskih domaćinstava.
Fenomen sve manjeg broja članova šire porodice, a sve većeg broja jednoroditeljskih porodica, stavlja u fokus pitanja socijalne zaštite.
