Srpski pisac Laza Kostić /1841-1910/, autor, prema mišljenju mnogih, najbolje srpske pjesme "Santa Marija dela Salute" /Gospa od Zdravlja/, umro je na današnji dan 1910. godine.
Kostić je začetnik srpske avangardne lirike, čija je poezija vrhunac romantizma u srpskoj književnosti.
Gimnaziju je učio u Pančevu, Novom Sadu i Budimu, a prava diplomirao Pešti, gdje je i doktorirao.
Kao saradnik Svetozara Miletića, vođe Srba u Vojvodini u borbi za nacionalna prava, Laza Kostić je odlazio u tajne misije u Srbiju i Crnu Goru. Dva puta su ga hapsile mađarske vlasti.
Laza Kostić je, naveli su njegovi savremenici, bio snažna i originalna lirska priroda, poliglota i intelektualac izuzetnog obrazovanja. Obogatio je srpski jezik novim izrazima i unio nove i smjele pjesničke oblike /jampski stih/.
Zahvaljujući njegovim prevodima, djela najvećeg engleskog i svjetskog pisca Vilijama Šekspira postala su poznata i na ovim prostorima.
Najpoznatija djela Laze Kostića su: lirske pjesme, balade i tragedije "Maksim Crnojević" i "Pera Segedinac". Čuvene su i njegove rasprave "Kritički uvod u opštu filozofiju" i "O Jovanu Jovanoviću Zmaju, njegovu pevanju, mišljenju i pisanju", te estetički spis "Osnova lepote u svetu s osobitim obzirom na srpske narodne pesme".
Ovaj velikan srpskog romantizma bio je pjesnik, pisac, novinar, filozof, poliglota i političar, a smatran je jednim od najvećih umova srpske literature. Posvetio se pisanju poezije i prevođenju sa evropskih jezika.
Bio je najzanimljivija i najistaknutija pjesnička ličnost druge polovine 19. vijeka u Srbiji.
Znao je grčki, latinski, njemački, francuski, engleski, ruski i mađarski jezik. Na svim tim jezicima je čitao, sa nekih prevodio, a na njemačkom, francuskom i latinskom i pisao.
Na njegovo intelektualno obrazovanje najveći uticaj imala je helenska književnost i filozofija: Homer, Eshil, Heraklit...
