Skupština srpskog naroda u BiH na zasjedanju u Banjaluci, na današnji dan 1992. godine donijela je odluku o formiranju Vojske Republike Srpske.
Vojska Republike Srpske /VRS/ bila je oružana sila Republike Srpske. Osnovana je pod nazivom Vojska Srpske Republike Bosne i Hercegovine.
Postojala je od 12. maja 1992. do 1. januara 2006, nakon čega je ušla u sastav Oružanih snaga BiH.
Vojno nasljeđe i identitet Vojske Republike Srpske njeguje Treći pješadijski /Republika Srpska/ puk.
Krsna slava VRS bio je Vidovdan, dok se 12. maj proslavlja kao Dan Vojske Republike Srpske i 3. pješadijskog /Republika Srpska/ puka.
VRS sačuvala je u ratu teritoriju Srpske i zaštitila narod boreći se istovremeno protiv snaga muslimansko-hrvatske koalicije i NATO-a, čija je avijacija u nekoliko navrata vršila agresiju na Republiku Srpsku i linije fronta koje su držali Srbi.
