Скупштина српског народа у БиХ на засједању у Бањалуци, на данашњи дан 1992. године донијела je одлуку о формирању Војске Републике Српске.
Војска Републике Српске /ВРС/ била је оружана сила Републике Српске. Основана је под називом Војска Српске Републике Босне и Херцеговине.
Постојала је од 12. маја 1992. до 1. јануара 2006, након чега је ушла у састав Оружаних снага БиХ.
Војно насљеђе и идентитет Војске Републике Српске његује Трећи пјешадијски /Република Српска/ пук.
Крсна слава ВРС био је Видовдан, док се 12. мај прославља као Дан Војске Републике Српске и 3. пјешадијског /Република Српска/ пука.
ВРС сачувала је у рату територију Српске и заштитила народ борећи се истовремено против снага муслиманско-хрватске коалиције и НАТО-а, чија је авијација у неколико наврата вршила агресију на Републику Српску и линије фронта које су држали Срби.
