Predsjedništvo Srpske Republike BiH 19. maja 1992. godine proglasilo je Zakon o Vojsci Srpske Republike BiH /kasnije Vojska Republike Srpske/, čime je stvoren pravni okvir za vojsku koja je poslije povlačenja JNA ostala da štiti vitalne interese Srba u bivšoj BiH.
Vojska Republike Srpske bila je oružana sila Srpske.
Postojala je od 12. maja 1992. do 1. januara 2006. godine, nakon čega je ušla u sastav Oružanih snaga BiH.
Vojno nasljeđe i identitet Vojske Republike Srpske njeguje Treći pješadijski /Republika Srpska/ puk.
Krsna slava Vojske Republike Srpske bio je Vidovdan, dok se 12. maj proslavlja kao Dan Vojske Republike Srpske i Trećeg pješadijskog /Republika Srpska/ puka.
