Предсједништво Српске Републике БиХ 19. маја 1992. године прогласило је Закон о Војсци Српске Републике БиХ /касније Војска Републике Српске/, чиме је створен правни оквир за војску која је послије повлачења ЈНА остала да штити виталне интересе Срба у бившој БиХ.
Војска Републике Српске била је оружана сила Српске.
Постојала је од 12. маја 1992. до 1. јануара 2006. године, након чега је ушла у састав Оружаних снага БиХ.
Војно насљеђе и идентитет Војске Републике Српске његује Трећи пјешадијски /Република Српска/ пук.
Крсна слава Војске Републике Српске био је Видовдан, док се 12. мај прославља као Дан Војске Републике Српске и Трећег пјешадијског /Република Српска/ пука.
