У свијету се данас обиљежава Дан слободе медија с циљем подизања свијести о значају слободе и независности медија.
Циљ обиљежавања овог дана, који окупља медијске професионалце који потом процјењују стање слободе медија и расправљају о могућностима за рјешавање бројних изазова, јесте подизање свијести о важности медијских слобода и њених основних начела.
Свјетски дан слободе медија први пут је обиљежен 3. маја 1994. године.
Организације за заштиту људских права и удружења новинара сматрају да се ситуација са слободом медија посљедњих година погоршала.
