U svijetu se danas obilježava Dan slobode medija s ciljem podizanja svijesti o značaju slobode i nezavisnosti medija.
Cilj obilježavanja ovog dana, koji okuplja medijske profesionalce koji potom procjenjuju stanje slobode medija i raspravljaju o mogućnostima za rješavanje brojnih izazova, jeste podizanje svijesti o važnosti medijskih sloboda i njenih osnovnih načela.
Svjetski dan slobode medija prvi put je obilježen 3. maja 1994. godine.
Organizacije za zaštitu ljudskih prava i udruženja novinara smatraju da se situacija sa slobodom medija posljednjih godina pogoršala.
