Francuski pisac Fransoa Rable, književni klasik, jedan od rodonačelnika modernog romana i majstor groteske, umro je na današnji dan 1553. godine.
Rable je najznačajnija ličnost francuske renesanse, humanista čiji je osnovni stav pantagruelizam - ljubav prema punom životu, duhovnom i tjelesnom.
Pisao je virtuozno, s ogromnim jezičkim bogatstvom.
Rano je stupio u kaluđerski red da bi mogao mirno da studira, ali se sukobio sa starješinama zbog želje da uči grčki jezik, što je tada sprečavala Sorbona.
Napustio je manastir, završio medicinu u Monpeljeu i postao ljekar u Lionu. Knjige su mu zabranjivane, pa je često mijenjao mjesto boravka.
Glavna djela: satirično-bufonski romani "Gargantua" /jedna knjiga/ i "Pantagruel" /četiri knjige/ objavljivana su u velikim razmacima.
U priči o neobičnoj istoriji kraljevske porodice divova, začinjenu šaljivim i slobodnim pričama, "masnim" dosjetkama i kalamburima, izrazio je ideje pravde, dobrote, čovječnosti, kulture i tolerancije.
Fransoa Rable rođen je 1494. godine.
